Tahira Clayton
An eclectic and enticingly tasteful combination of jazz, soul, and R&B, Tahira along with AMP Trio is the 2017 winner of the DC Jazz Prix Competition and the 2016 Most Promising and Audience Choice pick at the Unisa International Vocal Jazz Competition in South Africa. Tahira has headlined the DC Jazz Festival (2018) and has been a featured vocalist at Sony Music Hall, Dizzy’s Coca Cola Club (NYC), and the Jazz Showcase (Chicago).
Tahira is known for her powerfully rich-toned voice, joyful performances, and her ability to convey a story thru song. Capturing audiences around the globe for most of her life, Tahira’s debut album Wait, Till Now is her first self-written story to the world; a collection of personal experiences that each hold a piece of her deepest heart—defying genres in the process. Her sold-out album release concert at Nublu 151 in New York City catapulted her to the forefront of NYC’s crossover scene, introducing her artistry in full bloom, and selling her out of CDs within the first night.
Growing up in Dallas, Texas, Tahira grew up performing professionally in bands that allowed her to develop a genuine voice in a multitude of differing genres. Tahira received her formal music education at the University of North Texas, Jazz Studies Program where she began to shape her unique sound and quirky phrasing. This unique style, vast knowledge of numerous genres of music, and invaluable performance experience, Tahira has established herself as a true musical force, “there is no one like her and there probably never will be.”
“ I can’t point to anything that sounds just like it.”
